Sports and recreation facilities
Other activities available on the island include: bush walking, boating, cycling, surfing, fishing and diving/snorkeling.
Community and social
The Lihir Sports and Social Club is a multi-function centre perched on a hilltop with spectacular views of the nearby islands. As well as sporting facilities, the club has a bar, outdoor deck and an eat-in and take-away food service. During the year the club hosts a number of social events.
As well as several PNG Education Department Primary Schools and a new State High School, there is an International School on Lihir that takes students from Kindergarden to Year 7. The International School operates under the Queensland curriculum through Education Queensland International.
Lihir has a high-quality medical centre located at the town-site. It includes a well-equipped, 16-bed hospital with two doctors, six Health Extension Officers and approximately 23 nursing staff. There is also a clinic that provides a 24-hour emergency service.
Health risks are minimal for employees on Lihir, however a range of immunisations are recommended in the Australian Immunisation Handbook. Any person intending to visit or work on Lihir should discuss these requirements with their doctor prior to departure.
If you have access to a vehicle you will need a current, valid driver's license to drive around the island. Australian licences are valid for three months, after which you must obtain a PNG license from the local police station. Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road.
