Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) News
We are making lots of progress in many areas of our EVAW program. Something that just about everyone has been involved in is the White Ribbon survey. Thank you to everyone who completed a questionnaire or helped with administration and data entry. We look forward to receiving guidance from White Ribbon Australia on how to help make our workplaces safer and more supportive of women who suffer gender violence. The other big news was the success of the Lihir Ailan Haus Krai which EVERY one of our Lihir-based businesses supported by allowing staff to march. Additional support was provided through sponsorship by Anitua Corporate, Anitua Constructions, Anitua Protective Services, and NCS.
Another great initiative addressing EVAW was Anitua Supermarket’s contribution to Mine Safety Week whereby following the lead of Manager, Rossina Ilamia, the staff put on a very entertaining skit addressing sexual harassment in the workplace – sexual assault is an extreme form of sexual harassment. The team even got to show their drama skills off to a non-Anitua audience of diners in the Newcrest mess. Although they made a lot of people laugh, the Supermarket team got people thinking and talking about sexual harassment and promoted the fact that it is not acceptable at ANY time in ANY Anitua workplace. Congratulations on this great initiative Anitua Supermarket.

Lady Winifred Kamit and the World Bank IFC’s Amy Luinstra were VIP participants at the Haus Krai. They are pictured here being presented with ‘tut’ (a traditional Lihirian ceremonial ‘bilas’) by Lihirian youth leaders Christine Laketan and Maxine Pupet.
